Winter weather can affect your car more than you think. Even a small drop in temperature can drain your battery or change your tire pressure. Preparing your car now is important to keep you safe and help you avoid expensive repairs later.
This guide is for everyone driving in the UAE, whether you have a sedan or an SUV. It applies to anyone who uses a car for their daily commute or weekend trips.
In this post, we’ll explain why winter care is important, show you how to check your car’s key parts, and provide a simple list of steps to get your vehicle ready for the season.
Let’s jump right into the steps you need to take in order to prep your car for the winter.
1. Check Your Car Battery
The summer heat in Dubai weakens car batteries, but it is often the cooler winter weather that finally causes them to fail.
- What to do: Open your hood and look at the battery terminals (the metal connectors). If you see white or blue powder, clean it off with a cloth.
- Pro Tip: If your battery is more than three years old, go to a shop to have its charge tested. It is better to replace it now than to get stuck in a parking lot later.
2. Adjust Your Tire Pressure
When the temperature outside drops, the air pressure inside your tires drops too. Low tire pressure makes your car use more fuel and can be dangerous on the highway.
- The Rule: For every 10 degrees the temperature drops, your tire pressure can go down by 1 PSI.
- What to do: Check the sticker inside your driver’s side door to find the correct pressure number (PSI). Use a gauge to check your tires when they are cold (before you drive) and fill them to the correct level at a petrol station.
3. Inspect Wipers and Washer Fluid
We do get rain in the UAE during winter, and visibility is key. The hot summer sun often dries out the rubber on wiper blades, causing them to crack.
- What to do: Lift your wiper blades and run your finger along the rubber edge. If it feels rough or looks cracked, buy new ones.
- The Fluid: Make sure your windshield washer reservoir is full so you can clear away dust or mud quickly during a sudden shower.
4. Test All Your Lights
Winter mornings in Dubai can be very foggy. Your lights are your main safety tool so other drivers can see you.
- What to do: Turn on your headlights, high beams, and hazard lights. Walk around the car to make sure every bulb is working.
- Fog Lights: If your car has rear fog lights, learn how to use them. They are very bright and should only be used in heavy fog to prevent accidents.
5. Top Up Engine Coolant
Even though it is winter, your engine still produces a lot of heat. Coolant (also called antifreeze) keeps the engine temperature stable.
- What to do: Locate the coolant tank under the hood. The liquid should be between the “Min” and “Max” lines. If it is low, add the correct type of coolant recommended in your owner’s manual.
Ready for the Road?
Winter in the UAE is the best time to enjoy driving, but only if your car is up for the journey. Remember, spending ten minutes now to check your battery, tires, and lights can save you the headache of a breakdown on the side of Sheikh Zayed Road later. A little prevention is always cheaper than a big repair.
